Delifonseca named Best Indie in Observer awards


Delifonseca DocksideLiverpool’s Delifonseca Dockside has been named Best Independent Retailer in this year’s Observer Food Monthly Awards.

The business – the larger of two outlets opened in the city by Candice Fonseca – saw off competition from a host of the UK’s top delis, nominated by readers, to claim the title.

The recently opened Gloucester Services on the M5 was named Best Newcomer while Devon-based Cabrito Goat Meat won Best Producer.

Regional runners-up in the Independent Retailer Category included Sheffield’s Urban Pantry, Delilah in Nottingham, Welbeck Farm Shop, Norfolk Deli and Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop in East Anglia and Ultracomida in Aberystwyth.

Belfast deli Arcadia, Persian specialist Persepolis in South London and Ultracomida in Aberystwyth also made the cut as well as two Edinburgh retailers, Valvona & Crolla and Earthy.

Among the other award winners were The Ledbury (Best Restaurant), Nigella Lawson (Best Food Personality) and Jack Monroe (Best Food Blog).
