Entries now open for 2019 British Cheese Awards
Entries are now open for the 26th annual British Cheese Awards, which will be taking place on Wednesday 29th May at the Royal Bath & West Show, in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
The awards will see the crowning of this year’s Supreme Champion alongside four country awards and nine main categories such as Best Blue and Best New Cheese. Two new awards have also been introduced this year for cheddar cheese: Best Block Cheddar and Best Traditional Cheddar.
Last year’s competition – which saw Sheep Rustler from White Lake Cheese crowned Supreme Champion – attracted 1,008 entries from 148 cheesemakers from 54 counties across the UK and Ireland.
For 2019, 70 judges will score 124 classes of cheese on presentation, texture, aroma, flavour and balance. Dependent on the scores, cheeses can receive a gold, silver or bronze medal.
The 2019 BCAs will also be hosted in a new location in Exmoor Hall at the Royal Bath & West Showground, allowing the awards to have more visibility and host cheesemakers to sell their cheese at the show.
“Since the awards were first started we’ve seen a large increase in the number of cheesemakers entering,” said BCAs chairman, Julius Longman. “It just shows that not only is it a vibrant industry but that it is one that produces superb cheese.”
He added: “The awards are a great celebration of cheesemakers’ passion and variety. We are looking forward to seeing what these cheesemakers, renowned for their excellence and commitment to quality, will put into competition for this year.”
