Gin and fermented foods billed as 2016’s best start-up ideas
Gin and fermented foods like sauerkraut are two of the best business ideas for 2016, according to a study conducted by online business resource Startups.co.uk.
Starting a gin distillery or a gin bar is listed as the number one idea in the website’s ‘16 hottest business ideas’ list, which cites analyst Mintel’s forecast that sales of the spirit could hit £1.31bn by 2020 following estimated sales of £1.04bn last year.
Thanks to the growth in health-conscious consumers, fermented food and drink is in second place on the list. Startups.co.uk is predicting increased demand for live cultured foods like sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), miso paste (fermented soybean) and Korean kimchi (fermented vegetables) as well as fermented milk drinks like kefir.
Gourmet burgers is the only other food-related idea on the list of 16, which also includes fitness technology, women’s sportswear, live music festivals and posh pet food.
Startup.co.uk’s report combines in-depth research and analysis of emerging business and consumer trends and insights from leading market research bodies such as Mintel and Euromonitor, as well as interviews with industry experts, entrepreneurs and start-ups.
