Fresh from claiming the World Champion trophy, Norwegian blue cheese Kraftkar has now been named Champion of Champions in a special judging session held after the 29th annual World Cheese Awards in the Basque Country.

Kraftkar’s dramatic victory at the Kursaal Congress Centre in San Sebastián on Wednesday November 16 saw the blue cheese thrust into a heavyweight line-up with other former champion cheeses, all of which were assessed by an expert panel the following day.

The blue, which is produced by Tingvollost in mid Norway, took the top spot ahead of Fromagerie Agour’s Ossau Iraty in second and last year’s World Champion Le Gruyère AOP Premier Cru from Cremo SA von Mühlenen in third.

Although he was in the audience when his cheese was deemed World Champion, Tingvollost’s Gunnar Waagen had already left San Sebastián when the second award was announced.

Ingulf Galaaen, fellow Norwegian cheesemaker from Røros, accepted the Champion of Champions award on Tingvollost’s behalf.

“It was a very special day yesterday and Gunnar has already returned to Norway to make more cheese,” he said. “This is another wonderful moment and a fantastic achievement for cheesemakers in Norway.”
