Organic cheesemaker Christo Swanepoel has moved into a new creamery in Ballywalter and opened an adjoining dedicated cheese shop, what he claims is a first for Northern Ireland.

The new cheese shop, named Angeluque’s Pantry, offers a range of artisan cheeses as well as accompaniments such as crackers and cheese. The shop also features a glass partition separating it from the creamery, but allowing visitors to see the cheese being made and maturing.

Originally from South Africa, Swanepoel produces three cheeses: an acclaimed Dutch gouda style cheese, a Parmesan style cheese named Angeluque, and a South African style cheese made using cumin seeds.

Commenting on the new business, Swanepoel said: “I needed more space to develop my artisan cheeses in response to the tremendous interest in my Dutch style products and saw a gap in the market in Northern Ireland for a dedicated cheese shop.
