Selfridges goes wild about ‘bird friendly’ coffee
Bird & Wild coffee – an FFD Editors’ Choice product at June’s Harrogate Speciality Food Show – goes on sale in Selfridges in London this week as part of the Oxford Street store‘s Great Taste showcase event.
The Dorset- based company, said to be the UK’s only Bird Friendly coffee roaster, collected a three-star Great Taste award for its Ethiopian Yeti Farm coffee and a one-star for its newer Raul Mamani coffee from Peru.
Bird Friendly certification, inspected to US Department of Agriculture standards, means Bird & Wild’s coffee comes from shade-grown plantations where producers are working to eliminate pesticides and chemical fertilisers, protect watercourses and also look after the interests of workers and their communities.
Emma Broomhead of Bird & Wild told FFD: “We are also the only UK coffee company to use 100% compostable packaging, which we’re very proud of and feel that it fits very well with the ethos of our brand and our responsibility to the environment.”
She said September has been a “terrific month” for the company, combining the Great Taste seal of approval with the chance to offer samples of its coffees at Selfridges’ Great Taste promotion and to “spread the word about the importance to the environment of being bird friendly”.
