Delis in Scotland, West Sussex and North Yorkshire are among the 20 shortlisted stores in the Best Small Shops Competition, set up by the All Party Parliamentary Small Shops Group (APPSSG).

Picturesque Yorkshire store Hunters of Helmsley, novel deli-cum-bookshop The Mainstream Trading Co in Roxburghshire and West Sussex outlet Piccola Italia are all in the running for the title Best Small Shop 2015. The winner will be named at a reception at the House of Commons on February 25.

The three delis join a range of businesses including an independent record store, an optician and two cycle shops on the shortlist for the scheme, which is run for the APPSSG by the Independent Retailers Confederation.

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk, who chairs the APPSSG, said: “Small shops really are the backbone of Britain, providing essential services for local people and creating jobs in their communities. I think it is right that Parliament acknowledges the vital role small shops play and seeks to recognise and reward the very best small shops across the country.”

In a statement, the award judges said they were “in awe of the extent to which the best [shops] are embedded in their community”.
