Great Taste Case study

JubyLee Bakes is a charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, autism and Down Syndrome. Created in 2016 and staffed solely by volunteers, JubyLee Bakes has won awards for their work as a Charity, but never before for the cakes that they bake with the young people they work with. In 2024 JubyLee Bakes entered Great Taste for the first time with the hope of gaining more visibility in the community.

Ellen Tomlinson, general manager and trustee comments: “The Great Taste logo is universally recognised, since we set up JubyLee Bakes, it has been a dream of ours to be able to display the black and gold stars on some of our products. Winning 1-star for three of the five products we have entered has been wonderful. Our charity strives to encourage visibility in the community and positive inclusion for our young people, the sale of their bakes is great for raising self-esteem. I’m hoping that achieving a Great Taste accolade will increase that visibility and maybe even lead to a higher volume of sales.

“Our Great Taste stars have confirmed that, given the appropriate support, our young people have so much to offer the world. Over 90% of adults with learning disabilities never have any long-term work and are almost completely invisible in mainstream society. If we were to go on and obtain more awards in the future, it would boost the confidence of our young people even more. Not only that, but it would signal to the wider community that JubyLee Bakes are continually striving to develop great handmade artisanal products.”
