Great Taste case study
Antico Nero d’Aspromonte was founded in 2018 to celebrate the wild black pig indigenous to the Calabrian Apennines. The Aspromonte is a very rare native breed, and was threatened with extinction until special recovery measures were put in place in 1985.
All products in the Antico Nero d’Aspromonte range are made from ancient artisanal processes and the animals are raised free-range, grazing on wild acorns and other native fauna.
The company first entered Great Taste in 2024 and achieved a 2-star award for their Antica ‘Nduja. Founder and general manager Sabrina Ferrari says: “We were encouraged to enter Great Taste by a loyal UK-based customer. Our ‘Nduja was his best selling product and he wanted us to receive the recognition he felt we deserved.
We see our Great Taste award as recognition of the gastronomic heritage of our ancestors.
“This award is very important to us, as it really helps to highlight our efforts to stay true to the original recipes and processes that are so important to our produce. This particular product comes from an ancient recipe that we have repurposed for modern times, whilst staying as true as we can to the traditional smoking methods and authentic flavour.
…it really helps to highlight our efforts to stay true to the original recipes and processes that are so important to our produce.
“We see our Great Taste award as recognition of the gastronomic heritage of our ancestors.
…our award has been really beneficial to the business. It’s third-party recognition and it helps to make us visible to lovers of good food and good charcuterie.
“As well as the personal achievement that this signifies for us, our award has been really beneficial to the business. It’s third-party recognition and it helps to make us visible to lovers of good food and good charcuterie. Our existing customers already understand the quality in what we do, but this helps expose us to many more markets.”
